Dr. Wiegman and a professional staff of 60 are responsible for the academic programs (including accreditation, recruitment, admissions, financial aid, student affairs, counseling, curriculum, standardized patients, human simulation, faculty affairs, rural and minority affairs, regional campuses, international programs, and affirmative action) of  the Health Sciences Center (Dentistry, Nursing and Public Health) and the School of Medicine. Dr. Wiegman is currently the Principal Investigator on a Commonwealth of Kentucky Grant focused on rural medicine through the Trover Campus Program with a total value of $10,000,000.  He is also the Principal Investigator on a $941,000 stimulus grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to create a broadcast center for medical education throughout the state and he has recently been a Co-Investigator on several Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Grants for medical education. At present, Dr. Wiegman's educational research interests include: comparative international medical education, curriculum development, and the assessment of educational outcomes.

At an earlier time as a full-time scientist with research interests in the microcirculation, hypertension, and exercise physiology, Dr. Wiegman authored/coauthored over 100 publications including 30 full-length research papers and sections of two medical textbooks.  He was Principal Investigator/Co-Investigator on ten research grants funded at $1,000,000.

Dr. Wiegman regularly participates in faculty activities within the Department and often serves as an examiner for Masters and Ph.D. Qualifying Exams. Dr. Wiegman continues his teaching committment in the Medical Physiology course and contributes to the development of many other basic physiological science programs and advanced physiology courses. He always makes time for meeting with and counseling students and faculty at all levels in their efforts for educational and career development and advancement.
