Residents Experience Life As a Patient During Poverty and Social Justice Rotation
Second-year resident Michelle Parchman spent time using public transportation and experiencing life in a way that many of her patients do. The new Poverty and Social Justice rotation requires residents to live outside their comfort zones and teaches them lessons they cannot learn in medical school. More here.

Gold Humanism Society Award
Third-year medical students select up to six residents to receive The Arnold P. Gold Foundation Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Award based on their demonstrated commitment to teaching and compassionate treatment of patients and families, students and colleagues. Each award winner is presented with a certificate, a specially designed gold lapel pin and a check for $250 from The Gold Foundation. Dr. Canaan Herrygers was among the recipient's of the most recent award.

Communication Curriculum Presented at International Conference
Several members of the Department of Pediatrics traveled to Chicago in October to present their communication education tools. Kimberly Boland, M.D., and Tara McKinley presented their work, Teaching Pediatricians to Talk, A Needs Assessment. Ellie Peterson, M.D., enlightened the conference on her work, A Simulation-Based Communication Skills Curriculum: 1 Year Results. Kate Potter, M.D.'s Two Philosophies, One Curriculum: Initial Results of a Communication Program made its appearance via poster session. Read more about improving communication.
