Dr. Qazzaz is currently a senior research associate at the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, University of Louisville, School of Medicine. Dr. Qazzaz received his PhD degree at the University College of Dublin (UCD), Dublin, Ireland in Biochemistry (1988) and completed his postdoctoral fellowships in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Louisville.

Dr. Qazzaz’s research experience includes a combination of molecular cloning, protein chemistry and natural product analysis. His areas of specific scientific research center around characterization, structural analysis, and biosynthesis of a family of potentially new hormones known as the endogenous mammalian cardenolides and their pathophysiologic function in control of cellular ion transport activity. The model under investigation is that of endogenous digoxin like immunoreactive factor (DLIF) and ouabain like factor (OLF) and their interaction with the sodium pump (Na,K ATPase; NKA) and its isoforms. The approach is based on the theory of structure function complementarity between endogenous receptors (NKA), endogenous ligands (DLIF, OLF), and pharmacologic agents (digitalis, ouabain).

He has published over 75 papers and abstracts in several prestigious journals and has presented at several national and international scientific conferences including the American Association for Clinical Chemistry (AACC), Clinical Ligand Assay Society (CLAS), American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB), and the Endocrine Society.

Along with other members of Dr. Valdes’ team, Dr. Qazzaz was awarded first place recepient of the coveted Walter Walser prize for best poster presentation at Clinical Ligand Assay Society (CLAS 1999), first place winner/originality for Faculty Research Day at at Univ. of Louisville, School of Medicine 1999, first place winner of Sheard Sanford Medical Student Award Competition at American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP 1998), best poster award at AACC National Meeting 1995, and an honorable mention award for Student Research Day at Univ. of Louisville, School of Medicine 1994.

Dr. Qazzaz, and the co-inventor Professor Roland Valdes, Jr., recently received a licensing option from an industrial corporation to develop immunoassays based on the discovery of these drug-like molecules and their potential links to heart disease.
