The Division of Laboratory Medicine is comprised of five sections: Clinical Chemistry and Toxicology, Hematology and Coagulation, Microbiology, Molecular Diagnostics and Transfusion Medicine. The Division serves as a regional resource for clinical laboratory services required for patient care and for educational programs in Clinical Pathology. The Division sponsors an annual full-day Laboratory Medicine Symposium every fall. Advanced fellowship training is currently available in Clinical Chemistry, which is accredited by ComACC and including sub-specialties in Toxicology and Pharmacogenetics and in Transfusion Medicine, which is accredited by the ACGME. In addition, the faculty are collectively engaged in a wide variety of research programs from basic science to the development of new clinical diagnostic tests or new blood component manufacturing processes in areas including: clinical consulting services; diagnostic proteomics; molecular diagnostics; pharmacogenetics; clinical and forensic toxicology; blood storage media and leukoreduction; as well as other state-of-the-art disciplines such as bioinformatics. These activities complement our clinical services and training programs throughout our Department.
