The
Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine continues to
maintain its primary teaching program at the University of Louisville
Hospital, but relies heavily on support for its residency and
fellowship training with the Veterans Administration Medical
Center, Norton Hospital, Jewish Hospital, and the Medical Examiner’s
Office. Under the direction of Dr. Larry Cook, Vice President
for Health Affairs and Dr. Edward C. Halperin, Dean of the School of Medicine, we are
developing a new approach to healthcare, research and education.
|
|
This
new approach is conceived in a vision that will help our department
become a nationally recognized center of excellence in basic
and applied research, education and training, and clinical
practice in pathology and laboratory medicine. We have established
the following goals: increase the research activities of our
full time faculty, residents and fellows, increase the quality
and quantity of publications of our full time faculty, residents
and fellows, increase our grant support with emphasis on federally
funded support, develop several applied research programs
to enhance diagnostic capabilities, develop and present quality,
state of the art education and training programs, offer a
pathology residency training program that attracts high quality
applicants and ranked highly as indicated by their ability
to successfully pass the American
Board of Pathology certifying exam on their initial sitting
and their professional exams, participate in the development
of a multi disciplinary graduate education program involving
the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, develop
Research Partnerships and Collaborative Programs and enhance
present clinical services and develop new service programs
to support the University of Louisville Challenge for Excellence
Programs, other University departments and extramural organizations
so as to achieve a solid financial base for the Department.
We hope this departmental-wide master strategic plan will
be used as the principal vision in guiding our Department’s
activities and growth for the twenty-first century.
