Welcome Message from the Chair
Welcome to the University of Louisville Department of Orthopaedic Surgery website. The purpose of this website is to provide you with the latest information about our orthopaedic residency program and our vision for the future of the Department. Our website is a work in progress and we expect it to continuously improve, so stay posted.
Providing strong educational leadership is a daily part of our Department's work. For 81 years, the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery has been dedicated to the education of orthopaedic surgery residents and the advancement of the field of orthopaedic surgery. Our faculty members are committed to education, patient care, and research.
Our teaching team is made up of busy orthopaedic surgeons, full-time academic faculty, private practice faculty, and full-time researchers.
We train a total of 20 orthopaedic residents over the course of five years. Our orthopaedic residents rotate at the University of Louisville Hospital, Jewish Hospital, Kosair Children's Hospital, Norton Healthcare, and the Louisville VA Hospital. The primary objectives of our program include producing top-notch orthopaedic surgeons that are superb technicians and diagnosticians with the necessary skills and training to have the options of an academic career or a career in private practice. Several improvements have been made in the residency program including the addition of a VA rotation, a research rotation, a night float, and an expanded educational conference series. Moreover, we are also planning on expanding the residency complement.
Our vision for the Department is to move from a “solid department” to a “nationally recognized department”. We are working towards being a regional center of clinical excellence, a top-ten residency training program, and a federally-funded research enterprise.
This summer, we were one of 10 University Medical Centers who hosted the Japanese Orthopaedic Association/AOA Traveling Fellows. These six orthopaedic surgeons spent June 30th - July 3rd in Louisville. There was terrific scientific exchange and a social program which included Churchill Downs, a barbeque, and a Louisville Bats baseball game.
On behalf of the Faculty, Residents, and Staff, I personally invite you to explore our Department. I am confident you will discover a unique program which is on the move towards greatness. Should you have any questions that are not answered on the website, please contact me directly at (502) 852-6964.
Sincerely yours,
Craig S. Roberts, M.D., M.B.A.
Chair, Department of Orthopaedic Surgery
