Educational Goals & Characteristics-

The Küntscher Orthopaedic Trauma Fellowship has been in existence at the University of Louisville since 1993.   The educational goal of this one year trauma fellowship is to offer the fellow comprehensive exposure to the management of long bone and pelvic ring injuries, involving patient management from the time of injury, planning fracture treatment, fracture stabilization, post-operative care and rehabilitation at this level 1 Trauma Center.    The fellow will round daily with their teaching attending at their affiliated hospitals, and will see 25-30 patients 3 times per week, in a clinical setting under the supervision of their teaching attending.

The emphasis of the training program will be for the Fellow to learn as part of a multi-disciplinary trauma team at the University of Louisville Hospital, Kosair Children's Hospital and Alliant Medical Pavilion.  Emphasis is placed on a team approach to post operative care, rehabilitation and surgical management of patients with complex orthopaedic trauma, including polytrauma, long-bone fractures, complex articular fractures including those of the pelvis and acetabulum.

The focus of the training program will be patient care and surgical exposure to further the educational experience of the Fellow.  Each fellow is expected to complete one research project during his/her fellowship training and will work with the director on these projects and attend one international conference with the director.

Each fellow is expected to attend weekly Grand Rounds and Fracture Conferences where intense cases are discussed to further their educational exposure.  Each fellow is evaluated at the end of his/her year of training.

Finally, candidates applying for the program must demonstrate a distinctive desire to concentrate in the area of Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery.
