Training
The didactic education process is provided during a weekly Wednesday afternoon education forum, weekly Grand Rounds, seminars and several postgraduate courses. Resident time is protected for the Wednesday conferences. Subspecialty seminars are led by the faculty followed by conferences on topics such as pathology, antepartum surveillance, CREOG reviews, primary/preventive health care issues, geriatric care for women, genetics and a weekly morbidity/mortality conference. Each weekly session includes pre-operative gynecology conference. A quarterly journal club provides the forum for formal presentations by the residents, literature review and a critical analysis of articles from selected journals. Faculty members are present to facilitate all of the didactic sessions. Weekly Grand Rounds are held on Friday morning from September through June. National and local speakers address relevant issues on new technology, basic science research and clinical subjects. Subspecialty division faculty members provide additional formal educational activities for the residents on the rotation. Several mini-courses throughout the year focus on psycho-sexual counseling, endoscopic cadaver surgery, genetics, ethics, practice management, professionalism and life-long learning skills. Faculty members conduct daily rounds with residents on each of the services.
The Department has introduced the concept of “continuity of care” into the resident clinics. This allows a resident to follow a patient throughout the four-year program and to institute primary care initiatives.
Annually, the Department in conjunction with the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists (AAGL) supports two fresh cadaver surgical courses. These courses attract international participants. Residents actively participate in the didactic aspects of the program.
Four named lectureships are held annually in conjunction with the Louisville Ob/Gyn Society. Nationally renowned speakers are invited to present two formal lectures.
Residents at the PGY-2, PGY-3 and the PGY-4 levels are provided support to attend a postgraduate course or meeting at the national level. PGY-2 residents are sent to the annual District V ACOG meeting or to the ACOG Annual Clinical Meeting; PGY-3 residents attend the CREOG Leadership meeting; and PGY-4 residents may select a regional or national meeting or course to attend.
All residents are required to take the yearly in-service training examination (CREOG). Each resident is provided a copy of Educational Objectives for Residents in Obstetrics and Gynecology published by CREOG, a listing of goals and objectives for each rotation and a reading list with recommended textbooks and reference books to be used throughout the four years. An extensive medical school library is readily available as well as several smaller libraries within the hospital complex. A computer and self-directed educational computer programs are available to all residents.
