Clinical Settings

The residents gain clinical experience at the University of Louisville Hospital (ULH) and at the University OB/GYN Foundation (UGOF), an ambulatory clinic adjacent to the hospital. Additional gynecologic surgical exposure is provided through rotations at other hospitals in the downtown academic medical complex and at several suburban Louisville and Southern Indiana community hospitals. At ULH and the other hospitals, the resident assumes the primary care of patients and exercises progressive responsibilities under appropriate faculty supervision.

University of Louisville Hospital

University of Louisville Hospital (ULH), which opened in 1983, serves as the major teaching hospital for University of Louisville students and housestaff officers. The hospital has a long-term funding commitment to support hospital care of the medically indigent through the Quality Care Trust Fund. ULH has 404 beds and provides a full range of diagnostic, therapeutic, emergency and surgical services. It is Kentucky’s only Level One Trauma Center and has a 24-hour helicopter emergency medical service. The labor and delivery (L&D) area and the newborn and neonatal intensive care unit nurseries recently have been renovated. The L&D unit has nine labor/delivery/recovery rooms, two operating suites, a four-bed triage area and four intensisve care antepartum beds. There is an additional nine-bed antenatal unit. The postpartum unit features private rooms.

Other Hospitals

Two hospitals in the downtown academic medical complex and several suburban and Southern Indiana community hospitals provide opportunity for the residents to gain experience in the care of private patients. While on subspecialty rotations such as urogynecology and reproductive endocrinology and infertility and on the general gynecology rotations, residents have operative time with the full-time faculty and have home-call for all in-house gynecologic consults at the downtown hospitals. Suburban and Southern Indiana community hospitals are the setting for the private gynecologic surgical rotations. Gratis faculty members who operate with the residents provide the supervision and in most cases are the first assistant to the resident.
