Our outstanding educational program is shaped by faculty members who are both renowned and accessible—examiners for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, current and former presidents of national professional organizations, and physicians who have influenced the progress of American obstetrics and gynecology over the past decades.  Our faculty are diverse in age, geographic origin and clinical interests but are united by a dedication to training the next generation of obstetrician/gynecologists.  Under the guidance of these leaders, you will perfect your diagnostic and treatment skills for the benefit of your patients.

We have a rich tradition of thoughtful surgical teaching at U of L. We maximize out-of-the-OR surgical learning so that time in the OR can be used to develop skills such as tissue-handling and dissection that cannot be learned elsewhere.  Our inanimate surgical lab is used to hone both laparoscopic and open surgical skills.  First-year residents work with senior faculty on surgical techniques including knot tying, pedicle ligation, basic and advanced suturing, hysterotomy closure, fascial closure and advanced pedicle ligation.  Second- and third-year residents attend a week-long endoscopic surgery course with fresh cadavers.

At U of L, our faculty members include physicians who are experts both in performing advanced laparoscopic procedures and in teaching these techniques.  The University of Louisville is a teaching site for the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopy courses, and our residents have the continuing benefit of working throughout the year with the faculty members who teach these courses.

This unique gynecologic surgery training is balanced by a challenging obstetrical experience with our high-acuity patient population in busy Labor and Delivery and outpatient clinic settings.  This unique gynecologic surgery training is balanced by a challenging obstetrical experience with our high-acuity patient population in busy Labor and Delivery and outpatient clinic settings.  Our research division mentors our residents in strong research projects—many residents in recent years have been recognized for their work with awards at ACOG meetings.  Our research division mentors several of our residents have been recognized for their work with awards at ACOG meetings.  Training in maternal-fetal medicine, gynecologic oncology, reproductive endocrinology and infertility, urogynecology and pediatric/adolescent gynecology is supervised by leaders in those fields, preparing residents who choose to subspecialize to be strong candidates for fellowship.  With this robust training in gynecology, obstetrics, research and each of the subspecialties, graduates from residency training in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women’s Health at the University of Louisville are ready to enter private or academic practice or continue on to fellowship training.

We are dedicated to education and fully accredited by the Residency Review Committee in Obstetrics and Gynecology.  We participate in the National Resident Matching Program through ERAS (Electronic Resident Application System), which you can access in your Dean’s office. We require three letters of recommendation, results of the United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) Step I and II, your Dean’s Letter and your Medical School transcript. Notification of availability of interview will be by E-mail. To be considered for the residency program, the Resident Selection Committee requires a personal interview. Scheduled interviews are conducted between November 1 and January 15. All applications must be submitted by January 8.
