Evaluation

The faculty assesses residents’ performance in writing after each rotation, or at least quarterly. We look for progression in clinical expertise and judgment, diagnostic acumen, knowledge, surgical technique, and interpersonal skills.  Each resident is assessed by his or her peers and coworkers in a 360˚ evaluation each year.

For self-assessment, we require residents (PGY2 and above) to take the American Board of Neurological Surgery examination annually.  We prefer that residents pass the exam for credit in the PGY4 year, and require that they do so before becoming Chief Resident.
