We strictly adhere to the ACGME’s duty-hours standards. Consistent with the council’s guidelines, residents spend at least one day in seven free of clinical responsibilities. All junior residents are on call in the hospital every fourth day on average. The next morning, they have no clinical responsibilities. Chief residents, in charge of the clinical service, take call daily from home.
Residents use a dedicated Call Room, with sleeping quarters, on the neurosurgical floor. The room contains bunk beds, computers, desks, refrigerator and telephone. A networked computer with oversized HD flat screen monitor is available in this room for the residents to review, as a group, lab data and new imaging. This site serves as the gathering point for the resident work rounds. The services share a networked fax/copier/printer and private bathroom with shower within the Call Room suite. Fresh sandwiches, salads and snacks are delivered daily to the Call Room for residents, and in addition, meal vouchers are available for the hospital cafeteria. The Department provides packaged snacks for the Call Room as well.
