Jonathan E. Hodes, M.D., FACS
Department Chairman Dr. Hodes earned his medical and master’s degrees from the Indiana University School of Medicine. He completed his internal medicine residency at the Indiana University Medical Center and a fellowship with the National Institute on Aging. He then completed a neurosurgical residency at the University of California San Francisco and fellowships at the University of Western Ontario (neurovascular surgery) and Lariboisiere Hospital in Paris, France (neurointerventional radiology).
Haring J.W. Nauta, M.D., Ph.D.
Dr. Nauta earned M.D/ Ph.D. degrees from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. He completed a surgery internship and neurosurgical residency at the University of Toronto. He has served on the faculty at the University of Toronto, Johns Hopkins University and the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas, where he served as department chair.
Thomas Becherer, M.D.
Dr. Becherer received his medical degree from the University of Kentucky. He completed a general surgery internship and his neurosurgical residency at the University of Kentucky.
Timir Banerjee, M.D.
Dr. Banerjee earned his doctorate from the University of Calcutta. He performed internships at Calcutta and New Delhi in India, and St. Joseph Infirmary in Louisville. He completed a general surgery residency at St. Joseph before his neurosurgery residency at Ohio State University. He spent four years on the neurosurgery faculty at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and a year with the University of Wisconsin-Madison before establishing a longtime practice in Louisville. Michael Doyle, M.D.
Dr. Doyle earned his medical degree from the University of Louisville. He completed an internship in general surgery before completing his neurosurgery residency at the University of Louisville, serving as the chief resident for two years.
Andrievs Dzenitis, M.D.
Dr. Dzenitis earned his medical degree from the Indiana University School of Medicine. He completed residencies in surgery and neurosurgery at Indiana University Medical Center. He was a captain in the U.S. Air Force. He previously has served on the UofL faculty in the departments of neurosurgery, and anatomical sciences and neurobiology. He also has served as the neurosurgical consultant for UofL Athletics.
Patricia Fernandez, M.D.
Dr. Fernandez earned her medical degree from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina. She completed a neurosurgical residency at the Hospital General de Agudos “Juan A. Fernandez” Municipalidad de la Ciudad, Buenos Aires, followed by a residency in diagnostic radiology at the University of Tennessee in Memphis. She has completed clinical fellowships in skull base surgery (University of Cincinnati), image-guided neurosurgery (Wayne State University, Detroit), neurosurgery (University of Illinois at Chicago), neuroradiology (Beth Israel Medical Center Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University, New York) and endovascular surgical neuroradiology (Beth Israel Medical Center Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University). She has served on the faculty at the University of Buenos Aires, Wayne State University, the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and the University of California-San Diego.
