Biography
Dr. Sowell joined the faculty full-time in 2002 and currently serves as Director of the University of Louisville Comprehensive Headache Program, Director of Medical Student Education in Neurology and Director of the Child Neurology Residency Program. The Headache Program is the first academic program of its kind in Kentucky to serve the needs of patient care, teaching and research in the field of headache. The Child Neurology Residency program is the first training program for child neurology at the University of Louisville, and was established by Dr. Sowell in 2005. Dr. Sowell’s medical student education responsibilities include serving as Director of the required Clerkship in Neurology for all fourth-year medical students, Co-Director of the Clinical Neurosciences Course for the second-year medical students, and faculty sponsor for the Student Interest Group In Neurology (SIGN), whose mission is to raise awareness of Neurology as a specialty within the University of Louisville. Dr. Sowell is Board-certified in Neurology with special qualification in child neurology.
Dr. Sowell completed medical school at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in 1987. He completed a residency in Pediatrics at the University of Arkansas/Arkansas Children’s Hospital in 1990. He then completed a residency-fellowship in Neurology (Child) at Washington University in St. Louis (Barnes Hospital, St. Louis Children’s Hospitals) in 1993. He came to Louisville in 1993 and became Director of Neurology for Kosair Children’s Hospital and was in private practice in both adult and pediatric neurology prior to joining the University of Louisville.
