Biography

David J. Houghton, M.D., M.P.H., received his Medical Degree from Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, GA, and his Masters in Public Health in epidemiology at Emory University in Atlanta, GA. He completed internship and residency training in neurology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA. Fellowship training was subsequently completed at the Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders Center at Pennsylvania Hospital, with broad training in medical, surgical, and botulinum toxin management of movement disorders.
His publications have appeared in peer-reviewed journals, online medical encyclopedias, a patient resource from the National Parkinson’s Foundation and a textbook on Deep Brain Stimulation for Parkinson’s Disease. He is currently a member of the American Academy of Neurology and Movement Disorders Society.
He joined the faculty at the University of Louisville as an Assistant Professor in July of 2007, becoming the Clinical Director of the Movement Disorder Surgical Program.  Collaborations with a multidisciplinary group of physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, psychologists, nutritionists, and socials workers contribute to the great success of this program.  He also was named Assistant Residency Program Director in January 2009, followed by promotion to Residency Program Director in July 2009.

Parkinson’s disease, Atypical parkinsonian disorders, Tremor, Chorea, Ataxia, Dystonia

Research Interests

His research interests include non-motor complications of Parkinson’s disease, gait disorders and therapy in Parkinson’s disease, radiological markers in movement disorders, and surgical management of movement disorders.  He has been Principal Investigator and Co- investigator on several clinical trials within the Department of Neurology.
