Neuroimmunology

Immunologic diseases of the nervous system occur when the immune system gets "confused" and attacks nerves or muscles. Sometimes this happens after the immune system gets "activated" by an infection or vaccine. The immune system may damage cells in the arms and legs (peripheral nerves), the spinal cord or the brain. Examples of diseases in this category include:

  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Optic neuritis
  • Transverse myelitis
  • Guillain-Barré Syndrome
  • Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy
  • Myasthenia Gravis

Treatments may include oral, intravenous, intramuscular or subcutaneous medications and plasmapheresis.

Accurate diagnosis and effective treatment require subspecialty expertise and advanced diagnostic techniques, both of which are available at University Neurologists, P.S.C.
