Dr. Michael Sowell is an Assistant Professor of Neurology and Pediatrics at the University of Louisville Health Sciences Center. After completing his doctorate of medicine at the University of Arkansas in 1987, he entered a residency in pediatrics at the University of Arkansas/Arkansas Children’s Hospital which he completed in 1990. He then trained in Neurology/Child Neurology at Washington University in St. Louis/St. Louis Children’s Hospital and Barnes Hospitals. Dr. Sowell completed additional training in Headache Disorders in adults at Washington University. Dr. Sowell is board-certified in Neurology with Special qualification in child neurology. Dr Sowell was previously in private practice in Neurology and Child Neurology in Louisville prior to joining the University of Louisville full-time in 2002.

Dr Sowell is Director of the University of Louisville Comprehensive Headache Program, the first academic headache specialty program in the state of Kentucky. In 2004, Dr. Sowell became Director of the University of Louisville Child Neurology Residency Program, newly established at the University of Louisville. Dr. Sowell is also the Director of Medical Student Education in Neurology, a role which includes Director of the Neurology Clerkship (required for all medical students at the University of Louisville), Co-Director of the Clinical Neurosciences Course (an introduction to clinical neurology and psychiatry) and faculty mentor for the Student Interest Group in Neurology (SIGN).

Dr. Sowell’s clinical and research interests are in pediatric neurologic disorders and headache disorders in all age groups.
