Students

 Juhi Bagaitkar (a 3rd Yr. PhD student in the laboratory of Dr. David Scott) received a 1st place award  for her poster presentation titled "Tobacco-regulated changes to P. gingivalis fimbrial proteins and capsule polysaccharides induce TLR2 hyposensitivity." at the James Graham Brown Cancer Center 8th Annual Retreat held on Friday, November 6, 2009.

Abhishek K Srivastava (a 4th Yr. PhD student in the laboratory of Dr. Haval Shirwan) has received two awards in 2009:

  • A 2nd place award  for his poster presentation titled " Costimulation tunes anti-tumor immunity: A novel platform for the development of therapeutic vaccines" at James Graham Brown Cancer Center 8th Annual Retreat held on Friday, November 6, 2009.

  • Michael K. Tanner Memorial Award for Excellence in Graduate Student Sciences at Research! Louisville 2009

Elizabeth Novak (a 4th Yr. PhD student in the laboratory of Dr. Don Demuth) has received two awards in 2009:

  •  2nd place Doctoral Basic Science Graduate Award  at Research! Louisville 2009.

  • A Ruth Kirschstein F31 Pre-doctoral fellowship grant from the NIH to support her studies for the PhD( 2009).

Colleen Tucker (a 5th Yr. PhD student in the laboratory of Dr. Michele Kosiewicz)  was awarded a 1st place Doctoral Basic Science Graduate Award  at Research! Louisville 2009.

Courtney George, a MD/ PhD student in the laboratory of Dr. Robert Stout, was awarded a Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award fellowship from NIH to support her studies for the PhD (2009).

 Chelsea Eaves, a 3rd Yr. PhD student in the laboratory of Dr. Tom Mitchell, was awarded an American Heart Association pre-doctoral fellowship for her project entitled " The role of IL-1beta in Monophosphoryl Lipid A's low toxicity and TRIF-biased signaling" in 2009.

Duygu Sag Cekic (PhD graduate, spring 2009 in the laboratory of Dr. Jill Suttles) was awarded a Graduate Dean’s Citation at the spring 2009 commencement.

 

Faculty & Staff

Dr. Bing Li, Postdoctoral Scholar in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, was honored at the annual meeting of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s  Kentucky-Southeast Indiana Chapter.  Dr. Li is the recipient of a 5 year, $572,928, Career Transition Award from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society for his work in Dr. Suttles’ laboratory on the regulation of Th17 differentiation.  His was the only such award granted nationally in 2009.   Drs. Li, Suttles and Stout were presented with a certificate awarded to the University of Louisville in recognition of the partnership of the MS Society with U of L in the pursuit of MS research.

 Dr. Jill Suttles was elected president and Dr. Robert D. Stout was elected to the council of the  International Society for Leukocyte Biology(2009).

 Dr. Venkatakrishna R.Jala won the Eicosanoid Research Foundation “Young Investigator” Award in the category of Structure/Function for his presentation titled “Novel strategies in targeting G-protein coupled leukotriene B4 receptors, BLT1 and BLT2 for inflammatory diseases,” sponsored by Enzo Life Sciences International at the 11th International Conference on Bioactive Lipids in Cancer, Inflammation, and Related Diseases, at Cancun, Mexico on October 25 - 28, 2009.

Dr. Pascale Alard  was awarded the Jewish Hospital and St. Mary's Foundation Faculty Award -Most Promising Basic Science Research at Research! Louisville 2009.

Christine Akimana, PhD and Souhaila Al-Khodor, Ph.D.,  post-docs in the laboratory of Dr. Yousef Abu Kwaik, recently received the first prize for the best poster ( out of ~150) at the 6th International Conference on Tularemia in Berlin, Germany(2009). Gary Baron, unit business manager in our Business office was recognized by the university for 30 years of service(2009).
