The scientific focus of the Pathogenesis Program is Cellular and Molecular Microbiology. Our understanding of the disease-causing mechanisms of microbial pathogens relies on detailed examinations of the interplay between pathogens and the host cellular and immune responses. This requires a true interdisciplinary approach that is facilitated by collaborations with faculty of the Interdisciplinary Program in Immunology to dissect the molecular and cellular aspects of the immune responses to infection. These studies in the Department are facilitated by the establishment of the Center for Predictive Medicine in Biodefense and Emerging Infectious Disease, an NIH Regional Biocontainment Laboratory.

Faculty members in the Pathogenesis Program are housed in the Departments of Microbiology and Immunology, Biology, and  at the UofL School of Dentistry. Links below describe  research in individual laboratories.
