Our Mission
The mission of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology is to maintain academic excellence and regional, national, and international recognition for the quality of its research, educational, and service activities. To accomplish this, the department strives to:![]()
- Contribute to global comprehension of infectious disease processes and immune responses through active participation in high quality biomedical research and other associated scholarly activities
- Provide the highest caliber research and educational experiences in microbiology and immunology for the education and training of future biomedical scientists who will continue to advance biomedical research, education, and service
- Provide high caliber instruction in microbiology and immunology for the education and preparation of physicians and dentists
- Provide high caliber service to the School of Medicine, the University of Louisville, the City of Louisville and surrounding region, the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and national and international professional and public organizations.
The faculty currently focus on the study of opportunistic and emerging infections and on the cellular and molecular bases of chronic inflammatory responses. In response to the Challenge for Excellence, the faculty maintain active involvement in the Center for Genetics and Molecular Medicine and continue to foster and expand interdisciplinary collaborations in the focus areas of molecular medicine, cancer, transplantation, cardiovascular disease, visual sciences, and neurosciences.
