U of L residency program celebrates a perfect 'Match Mayhem'

It was St. Patrick's Day and Match Day for University of Louisville medical students as they opened their envelopes from the National Residency Match Program to find where they had been matched for residency training.

Basketball may have its "March Madness," but for University of Louisville medical students, Thursday was "Match Mayhem."

It was Match Day for University of Louisville medical students as they opened their envelopes from the National Residency Match Program to find where they had been matched for residency training.

The Match, conducted annually by the NRMP, uses a computerized algorithm designed to the best results by aligning the preferences of applicants with the preferences of residency programs.

The results are used to fill thousands of training positions available in the United States.

Of that campus-wide group, 34 will continue their medical training at the University of Louisville. Included in that are 22 categorical matches and 12 preliminary matches.

"We are delighted with the results of the 2011 match!," Dr. Barbara Casper, Vice Chair for Education and director of the University of Louisville Internal Medicine Residency Program, said. "We have been successful in recruiting an outstanding intern class and look forward to working with them in July.

"All of the U of L students were successful in securing positions and we had the most successful match we have ever had campus-wide. Thanks again to all of the staff, faculty and residents who worked so hard to make this such a successful year!"
