Clinical research course offered by Infectious Diseases division
Dr. Julio Ramirez, Chief of the U of L Divsion of Infectious Diseases will lead the clinical research course
The University of Louisville Division of Infectious Diseases will once again be offering a course to health care workers interested in a basic and concise review of the methodology for clinical research.
"The Process of Clinical Research: Step by Step from Idea to Publication" will be held over 10 days beginning August 5 at the University of Louisville Clinical and Translational Research Building (550 South Hancock Street), and directed by Dr. Julio Ramirez, Chief of the U of L Division of Infectious Diseases.
Advancing the knowledge of the basic principles of clinical research, including how research is conducted, evaluated and applied to patient care is the primary goal of the course.
At the end of this course, participants will have a working knowledge of statistics and clinical research that will help them move from idea to publication with the ultimate goal of encouraging participants to pursue the exciting field of clinical research.
Cost of the entire course is $100 per participant for the 10 sessions. Scholarships are available through the Division of Infectious Diseases.

The schedule of courses is as follows (all sessions are 4 p.m. - 5 p.m. at the CTR Building):
|Clinical Research: Basic Ingredients||To perform an overview of the clinical research process as an introduction to the course.
|Planning the Study: Questions and Design||To review the characteristics of a good research question and different research designs.
|Planning the Study: Ethical and Regulatory Issues||To review basic ethical principles and the IRB/FDA government regulations.
|Performing the Study: Common Pitfalls||To review the elements of data collection, data management, and study implementation.
|Analyzing the Data: Study Result||To present the basic concepts regarding the null hypothesis and p value.
|Analyzing the Data: Basic Statistical Test||To review the basic statistical tests used in clinical research.
|Analyzing the Data: Measures of Association||To review the most common measures of association used in clinical research.
|Analyzing the Data: Confounding||To present the basic concepts regarding confounding bias and its control.
|Medical Writing: Abstract, Poster and Manuscript||To discuss the content of an abstract, sections of the article, and reasons for rejection.
|Clinical Research: Elements for Success||To review the "do" and "do not" during your initial steps as a clinical investigator.
