The University of Louisville Department of Medicine houses 10 divisions with approximately 170 faculty and over 150 staff serving four hospitals in the Louisville metro area (University of Louisville Hospital, Robley Rex Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Jewish & St. Mary's Hospital and Norton Hospital).
It's Internal Medicine and Medicine-Pediatrics residencies and subspecialty training programs are accredited and provide superb experiences in clinical care and research.
The Division of Cardiovascular Medicine houses one of the strongest biomedical research units in molecular cardiology in the world and is currently conducting the first clinical trial in stem cells and congestive heart failure.- The Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition is at the forefront of liver and nutrition research with internationally recognized experts involved in alcohol-related liver disease and nutrition.
- The Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Disorders Medicine recently became a site for the NIH sponsored IPFnet multicenter network and is conducting basic and clinical research in emphysema, acute lung injury and lung fibrosis.
- The Division of Medical Oncology and Hematology and the James Graham Brown Cancer Center continue their fight against cancer with sophisticated multidisciplinary programs focused on clinical and basic research and with a highly productive drug development enterprse.
- Faculty in the Division of General Internal Medicine, Palliative Medicine and Medical Education have received a number of awards for teaching and have attracted grants for education.
- The Division of Nephrology has a world class proteomics center and is generating exciting new and clinically relevant information. This, together with outstanding work investigating the role of androgens by the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes, pneumonia and HIV by Infectious Diseases, connective tissue disorders by Rheumatology, new methodologies in Bone Marrow Transplantation, and dermal manifestations of cancer by Dermatology provide a strong foundation for innovation and discovery that positively impacts our trainees, faculty and customers alike.
