Luis S. Marsano-Obando

Luis Marsano endowed chair banner Luis S. Marsano, M.D. is professor of medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition at the University of Louisville School of Medicine.

His research is funded by the Veterans' Administration and several pharmaceutical research institutes.

Marsano's research focuses on finding new treatments for liver disease including cirrhosis and various forms of hepatitis.

He has directed multiple clinical trials to determine the safety and effectiveness of new drugs for these disorders

Marsano has authored or co-authored more than 75 papers, book chapters, reviews and abstracts.

He has served as a reviewer for multiple scientific journals, on review panels for the Veterans’ Administration and on two Medicare Advisory committees.

In 2005, he received the Lifetime Teaching Award from fellows, faculty and staff in the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition.

He is a member of more than 15 professional associations both in the United States and Peru and is past-president of the Kentucky Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

He is a graduate of the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia School of Science and Philosophy and School of Medicine.

Marsano completed internships at the University of Miami affiliated hospitals in medicine and internal medicine and went on to complete a fellowship in Hepatology.

He then completed a fellowship in gastroenterology at Washington University affiliated Hospitals and served as a clinical scholar in medicine at University of Kentucky affiliated hospitals.

He is board certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology.

Marsano joined U of L in 2000 after more than a decade at the University of Kentucky.

Jewish Hospital Distinguished Chair in Hepatology

School of Medicine - Established November 2000

Jewish Hospital Foundation created this distinguished chair in hepatology, which was matched by the state Research Challenge Trust Fund. The chair studies new therapeutic strategies to treat liver disease.

Jewish Hospital Foundation was a principal contributor to the bicentennial campaign, providing funds for the Donald E. Baxter Biomedical Research Building and numerous clinical and research programs in the School of Medicine.

Founded in 1905, Jewish Hospital has long been a partner with the School of Medicine.

In 2001, U of L surgeons led a Jewish Hospital clinical team that performed the world's first two implants of the AbioCor self-contained artificial heart.
