The Beard
chair was established through a gift from Marion F. and Margaret Beard
upon Marion's death in 1983. The purpose of the endowment is to fund
continued research in hematology.
Marion Beard was a clinical
faculty member in the university's Department of Medicine from 1947 to
1983 and served as chief of hematology.
He was known for his research in
blood diseases, particularly the role of vitamin B-12 metabolism in

cancer.
He also founded and was medical director of the American Red Cross regional blood center in Louisville.
