Dermatology practice keeping donations in the university family

Practice members include Jeffrey Callen, M.D., Lafayette Owen, M.D., Seema Doshi, M.D., Timothy Brown, M.D., Michael McCall, M.D., and Janine Malone, M.D.

It has been said that charity begins at home, and one Louisville physicians' practice is doing its part.

Associates in Dermatology, a private practice group comprised of 13 UofL faculty members, has donated a combined $300,000 in gifts to the School of Medicine and University of Louisville since 1993. The contributions have been used to support a variety of academic and clinical programs, with the ultimate goal being the expansion of educational opportunities at UofL.

"We're all faculty members at UofL, and many of our associates also are alumni of the university, so we have real sense of loyalty and pride in the university," explained Michael McCall, one of the physicians in the practice and the director of cutaneous surgery for UofL's Division of Dermatology.

"But we also think it's important to support the university economically. It helps create better students, makes for better physicians and makes for a better university. That improves our whole community and society at large."

Associates in Dermatology provides the latest in dermatological care, treating more than 91,000 patients annually at University Hospital and its offices in downtown Louisville. The group also sponsors and trains seven dermatology residents each year, McCall said.
