Miller, O'Brien and Ramos named to leadership posts at Health Sciences Center

Frank B. Miller, M.D., James G. O'Brien, M.D., and Kenneth S. Ramos, Ph.D., have been selected for top leadership posts on UofL's Health Sciences Center campus.

Frank B. Miller has been named interim chief of staff at University Hospital, effective Feb. 1, 2004, replacing Mark Pfeifer, M.D., who is leaving on sabbatical.

Miller joined the clinical faculty at the University of Louisville in 1983 and became an assistant professor of surgery in 1985.

He currently is chief of the Division of General Surgery in the School of Medicine and holds the Dr. Hiram C. Polk and Mrs. Lily Banerjee Chair in Surgery.

Miller's main interests are trauma care and vascular surgery. He has authored or co-authored 75 peer-reviewed publications and 10 textbook chapters.

Prior to joining UofL's faculty, Miller served as an assistant professor of surgery at the University of Nevada.

He periodically volunteers to provide medical care to underserved populations in the third world, including Ghana, Nigeria and El Salvador.

Miller earned his medical degree from Indiana University and completed his general surgical residency training at the University of Louisville.

James G. O'Brien has been selected as the chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Louisville.

O'Brien, who also holds the Margaret Dorward Smock Endowed Chair in Geriatrics, had served as the department's acting chair since the spring of 2002.

O'Brien has published more than 40 peer-reviewed journal articles and abstracts and has been a contributor to 12 textbook chapters dealing with issues related to aging and family medicine.

Prior to joining UofL in 1996, O'Brien served as a professor of family practice and acting associate dean for graduate programs at Michigan State University.

He also was director of the Geriatric Education Center of Michigan from 1987 to 1995.

He earned his medical degree from University College in Dublin, Ireland. O'Brien completed a fellowship in geriatrics at Duke University in 1983.

An internationally recognized expert on geriatric issues, O'Brien has served as a consultant to numerous professional organizations and government agencies, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He currently serves on the Governor's Task Force on Abuse and Neglect of the Elderly.

Kenneth S. Ramos has been selected to chair the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Louisville.

Ramos also has been named director of the university's Center for Genetics and Molecular Medicine.

Ramos came to UofL from Texas A&M University, where he held the Chester J. Reed Chair in Toxicology and served as director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences Center at Texas A&M.

He has been awarded numerous research grants throughout his career, including a $5 million grant for environmental health initiatives at Texas A&M.

He currently is the principal investigator in two $1 million, federally funded _studies examining issues related to the molecular pathogenesis of vascular and renal disease.

Ramos has published more than 280 peer-reviewed manuscripts and abstracts, as well as multiple book chapters and editorials.

He is a member of the NIEHS Board of Scientific Counselors and serves on numerous professional committees, grant review boards and advisory panels.

Ramos earned his Ph.D. in biochemical pharmacology from the University of Texas at Austin.
