Officials break ground on new Health Sciences Center research building
University of Louisville officials broke ground Feb. 3 on a new biomedical research building at Hancock Street and Muhammad Ali Boulevard.
The site, the first health sciences research facility to be built east of UofL's hospital, has space for multiple biomedical research labs and a parking garage.
"Today's ceremony marks a huge step forward in giving our researchers the space they need to do work that benefits everyone," said UofL President James Ramsey, Ph.D.
Rapid growth in research initiatives on the Health Sciences Campus has resulted in a severe shortage of laboratory facilities despite the construction of two other research buildings in the past five years.
"State-of-the-art laboratories are essential in our quest to recruit internationally known biomedical scientists and are key to our staying competitive as an academic health sciences center," said Larry Cook, M.D., UofL's executive vice president for health affairs.
Future tenants will include researchers from the university's James Graham Brown Cancer Center. Construction is expected to be complete by mid-2009.
