While attending his recent 40th medical school reunion, Walter Neil Scott, M.D., mentioned to a classmate that he wanted to give back to the university that helped him get started in his profession.

After discussing the opportunities available for gifts to the School of Medicine, Scott decided to endow a $1 million chair through a bequest.

The endowed chair will be named the Walter N. Scott Endowed Chair in the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, located in the Department of Medicine.

Scott, a faculty member at New York University's medical center, conducts research in cellular physiology and hormone action.

"We are extremely grateful to Dr. Scott for his generosity," says Joel Kaplan, M.D., vice president for health affairs and dean of the School of Medicine.

"I had the opportunity to talk with him personally in New York recently and am convinced that it is committed alumni like Dr. Scott who can make the difference in the medical school's ability to distinguish itself in education, research and patient care."

Born in Evansville, Ind., Scott earned his medical degree in 1960 from UofL and then moved to the Boston, where he completed his internship.

Since then, he has remained in the northeast except for two years in the '60s when he served as a biochemist at the School of Aerospace Medicine in San Antonio.

In 1989 the UofL School of Medicine recognized his accomplishments by awarding him its Distinguished Alumni Award.

Scott currently lives in New York City.
