Professor of Medicine

Chief, Division of General Internal Medicine, Palliative Medicine and Medical Education

Distinguished Teaching Professor

The Division of General Internal Medicine, Palliative Medicine and Medical Education consists of a dynamic group of 31 faculty physicians and two PhDs dedicated to promoting an educational environment conducive to active learning on the part of its students, residents, fellows and faculty; encouraging clinical and medical education research studies; and providing high quality medical treatment for the patients entrusted to our care.

The Division faculty provides a substantial amount of the medical student and resident teaching for the Department of Medicine, staffing 93 of the 96 general medicine ward attending months at the University of Louisville Hospital and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

The 2009-2010 year was an eventful one for the Division. The Division received the Department of Medicine Division Award for Excellence in Teaching for the fourth time since 2003 while numerous faculty received prestigious awards.

  • Dr. Barbara Casper received the Provost’s Exemplary Advising Award for the graduate school level.
  • Dr. Lori Earnshaw was awarded the Fitzbutler Prize for Humanism in Medicine and the School of Medicine’s Outstanding Educator Award.
  • Dr. Amy Holthouser received the Golden Apple Teaching Award and the Thomas B. Calhoon Teaching Award from the 2009 medical school graduating class. She was honored with the University’s Faculty Favorite Award and the Combined Internal Medicine/Pediatrics Residency Program Faculty Teaching Award. Dr. Holthouser was invited to give the commencement address for the graduating class.
  • Dr. Nancy Kubiak received the School of Medicine’s Outstanding Educator Award. Dr. Kubiak has been invited to speak on “Updates in Ambulatory Medicine” at the 30th Annual Southern Society for General Internal Medicine meeting in February 2011 in New Orleans.
  • Dr. Ann Shaw received the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award and was elected to the Gold Humanism Honor Society.
  • Dr. Jennifer Koch is founding Co-Editor of the School of Medicine’s first literary journal, Systole, with its inaugural issue in 2009.
  • Dr. Hugh Peterson was named in “Best Doctors in America.”
  • Dr. Lori Wagner was elected to Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.
  • Drs. Charlene Mitchell and Ann Shaw were elected to the Southern Society for Clinical Investigation.
  • Dr. Tom Dues continues to be our lead hospitalist at University Hospital.
  • Drs. Priya Krishnan, Bryan Moffett, Sudhir Narain and Francis Ouyang continue in their roles as excellent hospitalists and educators at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Our faculty clinical practice at the new Health Care Outpatient Center continues to grow thanks to the excellent patient care provided by Drs. Steve Houghland, Bridget Hittepole, and Ana Overley.

We were recently awarded a $2.1 million five-year NIH grant for the Development of an Interdisciplinary Oncology Palliative Care Curriculum. Dr. Mark Pfeifer serves as Principal Investigator for this esteemed grant.

The Division recruited an experienced internist, Dr. Yvette Cua, from Emory University. She is an expert in billing and coding and has won several awards for her national workshops. She will serve as Associate Vice-Chair for Clinical Affairs for the Department.
