Our program takes a systematic approach to resident mentoring, and each resident is assigned to a program director for the duration of his or her education at the university.
The first meeting occurs prior to the beginning of internship, and the two meet regularly to track the resident's academic progress and help clarify and plan for his or her career goals.
As each resident advances through the program, his or her assigned director provides career and fellowship advising, critique of personal statements and CVs, mock interviews for upcoming job or fellowship interviews, and help in identifying potential research opportunities.
There is sometimes value in working with mentors outside the program office, or even at other institutions, and we welcome that additional input and support for our residents.
The program directors and other faculty are happy to cull our professional resources and connections to help each resident build the team he or she needs.
University of Louisville residents are encouraged to participate in the life of the institution and to help shape our academic programs.
The House Staff Council, with representation from each of the residency programs, meets monthly with an associate dean of the medical school and addresses system-wide issues including patient care improvements and resident quality of life.
The Medicine Steering Committee is a department-specific group with elected representatives from each of our residency classes. It meets once a month with the Program Director, and the agenda is set by the house officers.
Finally, residents have historically and consistently sat on residency review committees and other groups within the hospital.
The Medicine program prides itself on having an "open door" policy in fielding resident concerns. Many house officers feel more comfortable addressing personal or professional worries with faculty or their assigned mentor, and we make ourselves exceedingly available to them.
