Application Policies, Process & Requirements

The University of Louisville Internal Medicine Residency Program is highly competitive. Students who think they are a good match for this program are encouraged to apply early and to make sure their ERAS application is complete.

Application Evaluation

Our program director and associate directors review every application.  The total application is reviewed across multiple factors and criteria, including:
  • Performance on the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE)
  • Medical school grades
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Communication skills
  • Maturity and other personal qualities that suggest success in our program
  • Career interests
  • Other factors that suggest you would succeed in and contribute to our program

Equal Opportunity

The Internal Medicine Residency Program does not discriminate on the basis of gender, race, age, religion, color, or national origin.

Selection Process

  • The program leadership team reviews every ERAS application and selects candidates to invite for an interview.

  • Invitations to interview are sent from the program coordinator to applicants via email.  A timely response in the affirmative reserves an interview slot for you.  No response or a late response can mean losing an interview spot.  A common courtesy is to reply in the negative if you have decided not to apply or interview with our program.  Suggestion:  Check your email daily during interview season.  No need to call.  If your application is in ERAS and you selected UofL Internal Medicine, then you application will be considered.

  • If an invitation is accepted, an interview is scheduled. Categorical interviews are conducted on Tuesdays and Fridays from October 16 through January 18. Preliminary candidates are interviewed on selected Thursdays.

  • Applicants who are not selected to interview are notified by email.  In some cases, applicants who are not considered for the first round of interviews will be asked if they would like to be on the waiting list.  The committee reviews the waiting list periodically during the season and often selects applicants from that pool at a later time.

  • We interview over 250 applicants for 23 categorical and 12 preliminary positions. If you see a strong match between your career goals and our program, please apply.

Couples Matching

Our program participates in couples matching.
If your partner is also interviewing at UofL, we work with you and the other department to try and schedule both interviews at or around the same time.  Sometimes we are successful and sometimes we are not. If we invite you to interview, please let us know about your partner's UofL interest.
