Call, Night Float & Schedule

by KLS last modified Apr 18, 2012 06:26 PM

***SCHEDULE CHANGES EFFECTIVE July 1, 2011***

With the following revised program schedule, call and night float requirements, our program is in full compliance of the new ACGME "16 hour rule" for incoming interns.  Through careful evaluation of our curriculum, we identified revisions that would maintain the quality and integrity of the program aligned to the following goals:
  • maintain the educational value of rotations;
  • ensure that interns get the experience needed to be ready to advance in their training; and,
  • eliminate redundancies in order to preserve time for electives
 Changes Highlights:
  • Although we streamlined the number of community hospital rotations, opportunities remain for rotating in community hospitals for 2-3 months or more in most of the same subspecialties as were available previously. Many subspecialty rotations remain available during the intern year, a unique feature of our program.
  • A new shift schedule for the MICU and cardiology teams was created that allows categorical interns to gain experience admitting patients on both a day shift and an overnight shift.
  • We have increased the amount of support provided to interns on MICU and cardiology teams by instituting a senior resident night float.

A New Academic Elective:  Academic Medicine

 A new and unique elective course which began Spring 2011 will allow interested residents to explore what it means to have a career in academic medicine.  The course will meet for eight 90 minute sessions and explore topics including careers in basic science research, clinical research, medical education, administration, and academic clinical service.  In addition, topics such as mentoring, promotion, and work-life balance will be discussed and demystified.  A resident who attends 60% of the sessions will receive a certificate of completion in order to support his/her CV.
