Educational Conferences
► Systematic Curriculum
Our Didactic Lectures provide a broad-based presentation of key Internal Medicine concepts across the three years of residency. Didactics are tele-conferenced to the VA Medical Center and are available online for future viewing. Our presentations focus on the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of common internal medicine problems, with an emphasis on both practical information and board preparation.
► Morning Report
Morning report is held three days a week (Monday, Tuesday and Friday, at noon) at the University Hospital and the VA Hospital where residents meet to discuss interesting and complex cases.
► Journal Club
Journal Club meets three times per month, enabling residents to learn and apply the necessary skills they will need as lifelong learners. Each Journal Club session aims to teach residents the expertise they will need for critical appraisal of medical literature. The resident presenting the article reviews it with a chief resident prior to the session and guidance is given.
► Grand Rounds
Weekly Grand Rounds for the Department of Medicine provides a venue to update every UofL internists' and subspecialists' knowledge of the cutting edge of medicine, as well as review new approaches to common clinical issues. Grand Rounds is tele-conferenced to the VA Medical Center.
► Morbidity and Mortality
Our M&M Conference is designed to teach critical skills in evaluating adverse events and the contributing individual as well as system wide issues which may benefit from change. Solutions to problems are generated and implemented to improve patient safety and care.
► Combined Conference
Once a month our residents attend combined conferences with pathology. These clinico-pathologic correlation programs allow all of our residents to be exposed to autopsy cases. In addition, interesting radiographic images are reviewed with a staff radiologist at an X-ray conference designed to improve radiographic interpretation of our Internal Medicine residents.
► Board Preparation
These review sessions are intended to help assure that our residents will be successful in passing boards. MKSAP and Med Study are provided for every categorical resident to augment the board review sessions.
► Residents as Teachers
Teaching is a priority for all residents in our university. Each year PGY1 residents from all specialties participate in a day long workshop designed to develop their teaching skills and abilities. Residents have the opportunity to interact with trainees from other UofL residency programs as well as practice their teaching skills.
► Intern Retreat
Each year our PGY1 residents participate in a two-day retreat in June. The goal of this retreat is to help interns prepared to assume supervisory roles as well as prepare for future careers. Specific skills such as team building, managing a team, and conflict resolution are taught, as well as ways to prepare for the job search or fellowships.
► Residents as Researchers
Each year PGY2 residents participate in a full day campus-wide workshop where they learn to conceptualize and implement research projects. Residents have the opportunity to interact with trainees from other UofL residency programs as well as practice the skills taught during this workshop.
► Shaker Village Retreat
Second year residents from the University of Louisville and the University of Kentucky attend a two day retreat in the spring at Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill, Kentucky. This is an opportunity to present interesting cases and research as well as to learn about the business of medicine.
► Scholarly Activity Project
During the three-year program, each resident will engage in at least one scholarly project. Residents may choose to complete a case report, hypothesis based research, or another creative activity, such as developing a WEB-based learning program. The house staff will work with faculty mentors to create posters, abstracts, or papers displaying their work. Many of our residents present at national meetings and have received national recognition for their work.
► Upper Level Resident Workshop
In this half-day workshop, residents gain knowledge, skills and resources to help them transition to the next phase of their careers, be it a fellowship or a position. This workshop covers topics such as negotiating a contract, disability insurance, financial issues, and planning for the step beyond the next step.
