University of Louisville Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program Announcement

EXTENSIVE OPPORTUNITIES TO LEARN THE PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE OF

HOSPICE AND PALLIATIVE MEDICINE

Since 2004, the University of Louisville has offered a Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program. Our fellowship is a 1-year clinical fellowship with research opportunities.

 

Application Deadline:

Accepting applications now through December 1.

 

Fellow Requirements:

Potential residents are required to have completed an ACGME or AOA-approved residency or fellowship program. The residency/fellowship must be in one of the following eleven disciplines: Internal Medicine and its subspecialties, Family Medicine and its subspecialties, Neurology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Psychiatry, Anesthesiology, Emergency Medicine, and Radiation Oncology.

 

Program highlights:

Ø Accredited in 2008 by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)

Ø Accredited in 2006 by the Palliative Medicine Review Committee (PMRC)

Ø Housed in the Division of General Internal Medicine, Palliative Medicine and Medical Education in the Department of Medicine

Ø Includes multiple training venues – Hospice inpatient units, continuity clinics at the VA and the Brown Cancer Center Supportive Care Clinic, Hospice and VA home care programs, long-term care facilities, and palliative care consult services

Ø Offers diverse educational opportunities and clinical practice models with rotations available at: Hosparus, Louisville Veterans Affairs Medical Center, University of Louisville Medical Center, Norton Hospital, Kosair Children’s Hospital, Jewish Hospital, and several Louisville area nursing homes

Ø Prepares fellows for serving as Medical Directors of community hospice organizations or hospital-based palliative care programs in both the academic or community setting

Ø Provides extensive educational opportunities with residents and students from all disciplines

Ø Focuses on the interdisciplinary team approach across settings: chaplains, psychologists, social workers, nurses, pharmacists, and bioethicists are routinely involved in patient care and teaching activities
