Sports Medicine Fellowship
The Department of Family and Geriatric Medicine established a sports medicine fellowship in 2006. The University of Louisville Sports Medicine Fellowship is a challenging, 12-month ACGME-accredited fellowship administered by DFGM. By completing the program, fellows will gain experience in diagnosing and treating injuries and illnesses common to athletes and other active individuals. In addition, it is expected that completion of the program will prepare fellows to successfully complete the examination for a Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine.
Fellows will work directly with teams at the University of Louisville, an NCAA Division 1 member of the Big East Conference, as well as athletes at Bellarmine University (NCAA Division II, Great Lakes Valley Conference) and Spalding University (NCAA Division III). Serving as Team Physician for a local high school is also expected. Additional event coverage includes the Louisville Triple Crown of Running, the Kentucky Derby Festival Marathon/mini-Marathon, and the Ironman competition.
The year is designed to be busy in order to provide as much experience as possible. The faculty is serious about advancing the field of sports medicine and expects that same level of commitment from our fellows.
