Congratulations on your interest in Family Medicine! We are very pleased that you have expressed this interest and are confident that you will find Family Medicine to be a rewarding career. The University of Louisville and our community corporate partner, Jewish Hospital Health Care Services, Inc., are working together to provide a solid training experience to prepare residents for a career in Family Medicine. A resident in the Department of Family and Geriatric Medicine receives the best of both training worlds: experiencing incomparable tertiary experiences in the university setting during the PGY-1 year and expanding out into the community for PGY-2 & 3 rotations. Our residents have two community Family Medicine Center options for their continuity training. Fellowships in Geriatric Medicine, Bioethics, Palliative Medicine, and Sports Medicine are also available.

We will consider graduates of U.S. and international medical schools for first year level positions (PGY-1) through the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) if the individual has one of the following:

  1. Prior or anticipated graduation from a LCME accredited medical school.
  2. Completed a "fifth pathway" program.
  3. Graduates of medical schools outside the United States and Canada who have not completed a “fifth pathway” program must have current, valid certification from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) at the time of application.

and:

  • International medical school graduates must have completed twelve months or more of clinical training (i.e. observership/externship involving patient contact) in an American or Canadian medical setting within the last two years.

  • Applicants must be a U.S. Citizen, have permanent residency status in the United States or be eligible for a J-1 Visa.

  • All graduates must have successful (passing score on first or second attempt on each part) completion of Parts 1 and 2 of the USMLE or other licensing examinations. Applications with successful completion of USMLE Part 3 will be given preferential consideration.

  • Applicants who have graduated from medical school within the last five years will be given preferential consideration.

The Family Medicine Residency Training program at the University of Louisville will only accept and review applications submitted through the ERAS system. If you are an international medical graduate, you may contact the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates for more information on the requirements for ERAS. If you are a U.S. medical graduate, please contact your school’s Student Affairs Office for assistance with the ERAS process.

For general residency requirements, you may access ACGME’s website at www.acgme.org.

December 1 is the deadline by which applications will be accepted. Applications received by November 1 will be given preferential consideration.

Invitations to interview may be offered upon review of the above documents. No invitations will be issued unless the application is complete within the ERAS system. In keeping with the University of Louisville School of Medicine’s Mission Statement, the Department of Family and Geriatric Medicine will give preference to applicants with ties to the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
