The father of writer W.H. Alden was a physician. He told his son, “Medicine is not a science. Rather, it is the intimate art of wooing nature.” Today, this remarkably true insight is actually only half true. Today, medicine is indeed a science; an amazing, awesome, even (sometimes) overwhelming science. Doctors yearn to learn it and patients expect to experience it. And both groups are right in these desires and expectations. Yet, at its heart, medicine as it should be practiced remains a most intimate art. When we appropriately blend the science and the art, our wooing of nature is more powerful, more effective, and more fulfilling.
