Bio

I am currently the Gheens Foundation Post-Doctoral Fellow in Bioethics in the Department of Philosophy and in the Department of Family and Geriatric Medicine, and in 2006-2007 will be the Crown Life Fellow in Bioethics in the Institute for Bioethics, Health Policy, and Law. Prior to coming to U of L, I was an assistant professor of philosophy at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, LA, where I taught primarily professional and health care ethics, and also chaired the university's IRB. Prior to that I was an adjunct professor at Southern Methodist
University.

I work in medical ethics, both theoretical and applied, and other areas of applied ethics. Some of my recent work analyzes various types of bioethical theory, methods in the teaching of health care ethics, moral analysis of some forms of activism and metaethical analysis of some forms of moral argument, and commentaries on the issues of stem cell research, sex education and euthanasia. I am currently working on a book on moral medical decision-making in our modern society of multiple rational moral viewpoints, which seeks to employ concepts from modern bioethical theories to move beyond the "liberal/communitarian" divide implied by the distinction commonly drawn between a focus on the autonomous individual and a focus on the interrelationships that are also a part of human existence. I am also preparing research to study the difficulties encountered in accessing hospice care and to improve the ability of persons to take advantage of that care when appropriate.
