Bio

After earning a degree in Mathematics at Harvard University, I worked for a year doing bench-top research in Hematology at Washington University. After finishing medical school and graduating in 1994 from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri, I entered residency training in Family Practice at St. John‘s Mercy Medical Center in St. Louis.

Upon graduation in 1997, I wanted to keep a teaching and clinical position, and joined the Family Medicine faculty at University of Louisville School of Medicine. My work since that time has focused on my clinical practice, residency teaching role, and expanding student teaching role directing the ICM course. I am happy to be involved in medical education at all levels, from the first day of medical school to continuing medical education for practicing and even retired physicians.

I believe that excellent communication skills are the most important part of being a physician, and I hope to get students excited about talking to patients and learning their stories as well as fixing their medical problems.

My main clinical and teaching interests are medical informatics, rheumatology, cardiology, and evidence-based medicine. I also teach a great deal about physician-patient communication skills, and education regarding communication skills has become my primary research focus.
