Full-Time Faculty Track

 

 

Term Appointment

Term faculty may be appointed for a contract period not to exceed 3 years. Such appointments shall not be tenurable. No term contract, continuation, or renewal shall result in the acquisition of tenure or imply renewal for subsequent terms .

Term to Tenurable Appointment

A nontenurable (term) faculty member shall be eligible to apply for and be appointed to a tenurable position.

Probationary/Tenure Appointments

Probationary appointments shall be appointments of full-time faculty members without tenure. Tenure is the right of certain full-time faculty personnel who hold academic rank to continuous full-time employment without reduction in academic rank until retirement or termination.

Extension of Probationary Period

A faculty member who faces extenuating circumstances that do not require a leave of absence but result in a significant reduction in ability to perform normal duties (such as personal illness, the birth or adoption of a child, or care of an ill family member) may request an extension of the probationary period for no less than six months and no more than one year. A second extension may be granted for a second extenuating circumstance.  An extension shall not be granted more than two (2) times within the probationary period of a faculty member.

Probationary to Term

Transfers out of a probationary appointment into a non-tenurable appointment may be requested anytime but must be complete prior to the time that the tenure review would begin.  This is normally at the end of the fifth year of service.  Transfers back to probationary status are then prohibited.

Reduced FTE

Full-time faculty, whether tenured, probationary or on term track, may work a reduced number of hours, 82%-99% and still maintain all full-time privileges and tenure status, if applicable.

 

Rolling contracts

Rolling contracts of a three-year duration are available after five years of service at the rank of associate professor or above.  Rolling contracts are renewable every year for an additional three years.

Part-Time Faculty

 

 

Part-Time

Part-time faculty shall be appointed by contract to teach specified courses or to engage in specified instruction, research or service less than full time for a designated period. No such appointment, continuation, or renewal thereof shall result in acquisition of tenure or implied renewal for subsequent periods. In the School of Medicine, part-time appointments are usually anything less than .82 FTE

Flexible Annual Work Plan

Each faculty member shall collaborate with the departmental chair to develop an annual work plan which they shall submit to the dean for approval. The work plan shall specify the responsibilities of the faculty member for teaching, research, service, other institutional obligations, and other activities or requirements for the faculty member's presence on campus. When circumstances require changes in the work plan, the faculty member and chair shall file an amended plan (including an explanation of the necessary changes) for the dean's approval.

Leave Options

 

 

Parental Leave

Paid parental leave for university faculty and staff has been available since November 1, 1995. Eligible employees receive six weeks of paid parental leave in connection with the birth or adoption of a child of the employee or of the qualifying adult.  In the case of parents who both work at the university, the policy would applies to both parents provided each otherwise meets the "eligible employee" criteria.

Medical Leave for Faculty and Administrators

Faculty and administrators may qualify for up to one-half year of base salary (six months for those on annual appointment; one semester for those on academic year appointment).  The justification for the medical leave must be documented by medical evidence satisfactory to the President or Provost.  Unpaid leave may be granted thereafter for continuing documented medical reasons.

Leave of Absence

One year spent on an officially approved leave of absence may be counted toward the seven-years of full-time service necessary for tenure. Any leave granted during the probationary period must carry with it a stipulation in writing as to whether the leave counts toward tenure.

Entrepreneurial Leave

Entrepreneurial leave is one option for the faculty member to consider when the individual plans to be a principal investigator (PI) on a federal government Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant or a Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) grant. For the SBIR program, company principal investigator's primary employment (i.e. more than 50%) must be with the small business. If a full time faculty member is to be a PI on an SBIR grant, on the company side, he/she must reduce their UofL employment concurrent with the award such that they are less than 50% with the University.

Sabbatical Leave

A tenured faculty member who has six contract years of full-time service at the University of Louisville may petition for a sabbatical leave of absence for one-half contract year on full pay or for one contract year on one-half pay.

Bereavement Leave

The university recognizes the need for employees to be away from work upon the death of an immediate family member. An employee, upon request, shall be granted three days of administrative leave with pay upon the death of any member of the employee's immediate family.

Retirement

 

 

Phased Retirement

Faculty phased retirement is available to each full-time tenured faculty member who has at least 10 years of service at the University of Louisville and whose age plus years of service equals at least 70.  Participants officially retire effective at the beginning of their phased retirement period to enable them to access their retirement benefits. They will be re-employed for no less than 33% or no more than 50% effort yet receive the same health insurance benefits provided to full-time faculty and a retirement fund contribution proportional to the percentage of work effort. Tuition remission benefits available to full-time faculty would remain as well.

UofL sends female faculty to the following AAMC programs each year: Early Career Women Faculty Professional Development Seminar; Mid-Career Women Faculty Professional Development Seminar; AAMC Minority Faculty Career Development Seminar in addition to the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) at Drexel University.

Tuition Remission

All regular/provisional 80% or greater full-time employees are eligible to take up to eight credit hours of tuition free each semester. The individual must be a regular or provisional 80% or greater FTE employee of the university on the first day of class for the semester to be eligible.

Early Learning Campus

The Early Learning Campus (ELC) is part of the Gladys and Lewis "Sonny" Bass Louisville Scholar House Campus and is an exemplary pre-school for children of UofL faculty, staff and students, and residents of the Louisville Scholar House. The facility offers extended day opportunities for children aged six weeks to four years.

Presbyterian Child Development Center

University of Louisville has a memorandum of understanding with Presbyterian Child Development Center to provide up to 20 child care slots for faculty, staff and students.

Dependent Tuition Remission

Tuition remission is available for dependent children of regular status employees at 80% F.T.E or above for courses counting toward a first undergraduate degree. If an employee becomes permanently disabled, retires or dies, his or her children continue to be eligible for tuition remission on the same basis as before.

Family Friendly Policies

U of L added domestic partners and their children to Family Medical Leave (FML) eligibility and modified FML to permit married or partnered employees to each take 12 weeks FML on birth or adoption, instead of sharing 12 weeks.

Two-Employee Premium Rate

When a husband and wife are both regular status, 80% or greater FTE employees at the university and they have dependents and want coverage for them, and both choose the same health insurance plan, they will be eligible for a special "two employee" rate for their family's health insurance coverage.

Waiver of Health Coverage

Full-Time employees (80% FTE or better) who waive health insurance will receive $175 per month in a flexible spending account that can be used for health care or dependent care.
