Development Programs
The Office of Faculty Affairs hosts as well as sponsors programs that support the professional development of the School of Medicine faculty members.
New Faculty Orientation
This annual informative meeting gives new faculty members the opportunity to learn about appointments, promotion, tenure and/or renewal of contracts, salary increases, research funding and other opportunities through the School of Medicine. To complete the process a one on one follow-up meeting with the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs is scheduled for each new faculty member.
Mentor Program
All new junior faculty members are given the opportunity to participate in the mentoring program. Junior faculty are matched with senior faculty who have similar professional interests and goals.
AAMC Programs
Each year the AAMC hosts Professional Development Seminars for both junior and senior women faculty members. In addition, a program for underrepresented minority faculty is presented as well as a session for Chairs and Deans. The School of Medicine sponsors faculty to attend these events. These seminars focus on the objectives, skills and knowledge areas related to academic and organizational leadership.
The Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM)
The School of Medicine supports a woman each year to apply for the ELAM program. Financial support is provided after acceptance. ELAM is the only in-depth national leadership program preparing women faculty for the highest administrative ranks at academic health center. ELAM alumnae have achieved notable personal and professional advancement, attaining significant administrative promotions ranging from Chief to Dean. ELAM is endorsed by the American Association of American Colleges, the Association of Academic Health Centers, the American Council on Education, the American Dental Education Association, and the American Medical Women's Association.
Academic Life, Experimental Design & Statistics Course
This course, presented by faculty in the Department of Pediatrics, provides a concise treatment of issues facing academic physicians interested in building research careers. This course is available to all junior faculty.
Clinical Research, Epidemiology and Statistics Training (CREST)
The CREST program involves curriculum of didactic instruction in epidemiology, biostatistics, health economics, health services and outcomes research and bioethics coupled with independent research under the direction of a faculty member. The CREST program will lead to a Certificate in Clinical Investigation Sciences upon approval by the Council on Postsecondary Education (CPE).
Research Opportunities for New Faculty
The Office of the Executive Vice President for Research offers an Intramural Research Incentive Grant (IRIG) program. Also, a grants workshop is offered each year as part of Research! Louisville. Medical Education
The mission of the Office of Medical Education (OME) is to coordinate all initiatives and activities that support the undergraduate medical education program, including curriculum development, delivery and evaluation. OME staff assist the Educational Policy Committee in managing the medical curriculum and work closely with departments, course directions, and individual faculty to assure that the curriculum is properly sequenced and integrated. To achieve its mission, the OME also coordinates the activities of the Paris Simulation Center; the Standardized Patient Clinic; the Medical Education Research Unit; faculty development programs focused on teaching and learning, such as the Teaching in Healthcare Professions teaching certificate and the Grand Rounds for HSC Educators series; and academic technology initiatives, such as the PDA initiative and the Blackboard courseware tool.
Delphi Center for Teaching and Learning
Focused on the University's central mission of teaching and learning, the Delphi Center offers campus-wide activities designed to enhance teaching and learning both inside and outside the classroom. Delphi gives support to faculty utilizing face-to-face and technology-based instruction; professional development seminars and certifications; online and distance-education classes; and degree programs, personal enrichment, and adult education classes. The Delphi Center is located in the Ekstrom Library; Kornhauser Library and Shelby Campus.
Leadership Development Program
The School of Medicine has designed a leadership development program aimed at enhancing faculty vitality and success in academic leadership, while advancing the school's mission of teaching, research and clinical care. The program will train 10 to 15 faculty in eight monthly three-hour workshops with explicit learning objectives that will include both didactic and hands-on components. Nominations to the program are solicited through the department chairs who are asked to provide release for the faculty member's participation. The ideal nominee is already in a leadership position in the department (e.g., division chief, residency, clerkship or course director, associate/vice chair or director of a research program).
