The Department
of Emergency Medicine at the University of Louisville offers
an elective rotation to senior medical students interested in
learning about Emergency Medicine. You will have 16 shifts in
the busy Emergency Department of our urban Level One Trauma
Center, divided among night / day, weekend/weekday shifts. You
and your fellow students will make your own schedule on the
first day of the rotation.

Under the
supervision of Emergency Medicine Faculty and senior residents,
you will develop your clinical skills by doing the primary assessment
of patients presenting to the ED with a wide variety of complaints.
You will have the opportunity to do procedures along with the
faculty and residents and will assist in trauma and medical
resuscitations.
Conferences
are held every Wednesday morning in the ED conference room and
you are expected to attend. There are also some conferences
at this time developed specifically for medical students and
interns to provide instruction on the most common chief complaints
and workups in Emergency Medicine.
Your grade for the rotation will be derived from a combination
of evaluations by faculty and residents, as well as a written
exam at the end of the rotation. Remember, we don't expect you
to be perfect, but we do expect progress, hard work, and a willingness
to learn.
