The
University of Louisville Department of Emergency Medicine's
(DEM) commitment to clinical research can be seen in the
collaborative efforts between DEM faculty and residents.
DEM expertise and support currently exists for multi-center
trial participation as well as collaborations with the University
of Louisville Departments of Internal Medicine (Cardiology
and Infectious Disease), Neurosurgery, Surgery and Pathology.
Although not a DEM focus, basic science research opportunities
are available within the Medical School.
The
multidisciplinary DEM Research Committee meets bimonthly
to facilitate the research process for faculty and residents.
Two experienced nurse coordinators provide assistance with
literature searches, grant writing, Human Studies submissions,
staff in-servicing, data collection, and manuscript preparation.
Participation
in academic research endeavor is a requirement of all resident
physicians. Each intern is assigned a faculty mentor who
oversees the development of the project. DEM resources as
already described are made available.
During
the PGY III year, projects are presented at DEM Research
Day, University of Louisville Hospital Resident Research
Forum, and/or scientific meetings. Travel funding is made
available for meeting presentation. Two faculty presented
"Resident Research Awards" are made annually.
Faculty
interest and expertise are diverse. Opportunities for student
and resident projects are readily available. Current activities
