CASE 4

EMS presents to your Emergency Department with a 32 year old male status post gun shot wound to the left distal femur. He complains of great pain. Bleeding is brisk, but seemingly controlled with a bulky pressure dressing. He has both dorsalis pedis and posterior tibial pulses, but is reluctant to move his ankle or toes due to pain. The following AP X-ray is obtained:

The injuries depicted are typical of what class of weapon? (HINT: caliber is difficult to determine, but what about the velocity?)
