Application/Resident Selection
The Department of Emergency Medicine (DEM) at the University of Louisville participates in the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) developed by the Association of American Medical Colleges. This service transmits residency applications, letters of recommendation, Dean’s letters, transcripts, USMLE scores, and other supporting credentials from the applicants and medical schools via the Internet.
The applications are downloaded from the Internet to compile a folder with the applicant’s information. The Program Directors screen applicant files and select approximately 100 applicants to interview based on their accomplishments in medical school and letters of recommenda¬tion.
Approximately 12 applicant interview dates are held between November and February. Applicants arrive the day before for an informal reception with residents. The Program Director gives an overview of the program to the group of applicants. Each applicant will have three half-hour sessions with assigned faculty and resident interviewers. Written interview evaluations become part of the applicant’s folder. Applicants are invited to attend the weekly didactic conference, daily walk rounds, and observe emergency patient care to experience further our training environment.
Each applicant’s folder is thoroughly reviewed and discussed by the faculty at a February ranking meeting. Applicants are ranked in the order agreed upon by the faculty and chief residents. After the rank order list is generated, it is certi¬fied and submitted to the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) via the Internet.
