The World Glaucoma Association has bestowed its Potential Future Impact Award on UofL ophthalmology professor Gülgün Tezel, M.D., for papers she wrote in 2007 regarding accelerated aging in the retina and optic nerve.
Tezel received the honor — a crystal bowl — during a June meeting of the European Glaucoma Society Meeting in Berlin, Germany. The annual award was first bestowed in 1999 and is supported by an unrestricted educational grant from Pfizer Ophthalmics. Winners are selected from among nominated papers submitted by researchers around the world.
Since joining UofL in 2002, Tezel has developed new theories and brought new insights into the molecular mechanisms behind glaucoma, one of the leading causes of blindness throughout the world. She also investigates new clinical options that employ alternative and enhanced strategies to treat glaucoma.
Tezel also is a recipient of the Research to Prevent Blindness Sybil B. Harrington Scholars Award.
