Susan Galandiuk named president-elect of Society of Pelvic Surgeons

Susan Galandiuk, professor of surgery at UofL, has been named president-elect of the Society of Pelvic Surgeons, an international organization developed by and for specialists in urology, obstetrics and gynecology and general surgery. Under Galandiuk's leadership, the annual meeting of the society will also come to Louisville in July 2011.

Susan Galandiuk, professor of surgery at UofL, has been named president-elect of the Society of Pelvic Surgeons, an international organization developed by and for specialists in urology, obstetrics and gynecology and general surgery. Under Galandiuk's leadership, the annual meeting of the society will also come to Louisville in July 2011. 

Dr. Galandiuk is a professor of surgery, director of the Price Institute of Surgical Research at UofL, and an active clinical surgeon focusing on colon and rectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease. Galandiuk has completed a sabbatical at the Blizard Institute and Queen Mary University in London and has accepted the title of honorary professor of translational surgical research in the institute within Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry.The institute's research focus targets cancer and genetics. Galandiuk's honorary professorship reflects her contribution to the university and builds an important bridge between UofL and one of the world's most respected research institutes.  She will continue her work there through two to three visits per year and through collaborative projects with the Price Institute of Surgical Research, which she directs. Her research is aimed at defining the mutations characterizing or driving the development of cancer against a background of inflammation such as occurs in Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
