Welcome to the University of Louisville Anesthesia Residency! We are proud to represent our department and hope to give you a small glimpse into our city and life as residents.
The residency program at University of Louisville will prepare you for life beyond residency. Our academics are emphasized through grand rounds, weekly didactics, key words, and monthly journal clubs. We are also encouraged to attend one anesthesia meeting per year which is financed by the department. Over the past year we have heavily emphasized board preparation and our scores from the in training exam were excellent.
The clinical rotations at our program leave no stone unturned. Our general anesthesia is performed at University Hospital and the VA, which includes Level 1 trauma, General Surgery, ENT, Gynecology, Urology, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, OMFS, and Plastics. Critical care is at University Hospital, the anesthesia residents are responsible for all neurosurgical patients, stroke patients and any specialty may consult us for intensive care management. While on critical care, we are also responsible for all codes. Obstetric anesthesia, Regional Anesthesia, and Pain Intervention/Management are learned during the CA-2 year at University Hospital. Pediatric anesthesia is done at Kosair Children's Hospital; and Cardiac/Thoracic/Vascular anesthesia is performed at Jewish Hospital. All these hospitals, with the exception of the VA, are found in downtown Louisville. The VA hospital is 10 minutes east of the city. Our program leaves you very well prepared for an academic or private practice, as well as any fellowship.
While we work hard and dedicate ourselves to learning, our residency also allows for life outside of residency. Louisville is not only very affordable but a great place to live. From night life, theater, and sports to the park system, arts, and shopping, we have something for everyone. Not to mention the Kentucky Derby which everyone should go to at least once!
Finally, we feel very privileged and lucky to be with such a great group of residents. We are each other's biggest fans and support system. It helps to go through residency with friends, people you can work and socialize with for four years and beyond. Whether celebrating major milestones and holidays or simply relaxing after a work week, we enjoy spending time together outside of the hospital. Please stop by the 'ville and visit us!
