Welcome to the University of Louisville Anesthesia Residency! We are proud to represent our department and hope to give you a small glimpse into our city and life as residents.
The residency program at University of Louisville prepares you for life beyond residency. Academics are emphasized through weekly grand rounds, didactics, and key word lectures, as well as monthly journal clubs. Residents are encouraged to attend one anesthesia meeting per year financed by the department. Often, most residents choose to attend the ASA’s national meeting and a board review course during the last year of training. Within the recent years, our stellar graduates boast a 100% pass rate on the written exam and the residents thrive in scoring well on the yearly in training exam.
The clinical rotations at our program leave no stone unturned. Our general anesthesia rotation performed at University Hospital and the VA includes Level 1 trauma cases, General Surgery, ENT, Gynecology, Urology, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, OMFS, and Plastics. The critical care rotation focuses on providing services for all neurosurgical patients, stroke patients and many other specialties that may need intensive care management. During the critical care rotations, our residents respond to all codes within University Hospital. Obstetric anesthesia, Regional Anesthesia, and Pain Intervention and Management are learned during the CA-2 year at University Hospital. One of the strengths of the program lies within the ability to rotate through a specific children’s and cardiac center without leaving the confines of the city. Our pediatric anesthesia rotation is done at Kosair Children's Hospital; while Cardiac/Thoracic/Vascular anesthesia is performed at Jewish Hospital. All of these hospitals, with the exception of the VA being 2 miles away, are found in the downtown Louisville area. Whether choosing to pursue academics, private practice or an accredited fellowship, our residents always leave the program well prepared.
While we work hard and dedicate ourselves to learning, life outside of residency continues. Louisville boasts a very affordable cost of living and provides a great place to live. Most residents buy wonderful homes within the greater metro Louisville area. Whether looking for night life, theater, or sports to the park system, arts, and shopping, the city has something for everyone. Not to mention the greatest two minutes in sports with the Kentucky Derby which everyone should go to at least once in their lifetime!
Finally, we feel very privileged and lucky to be around a great group of residents. We are each other's biggest fans and support system. It helps to go through four difficult years with friends and people you get along with and socialize with for years to come. Whether celebrating major milestones and holidays or simply relaxing after a work week, we enjoy spending time together outside of the hospital. Please stop by the 'ville and visit us!
